I've purchased new StingRay 4-string several months ago and I also have a StingRay fiver.

As you know, StingRay fiver is very quiet with no ground noise or something.

but My new stingray 4-string is too noisy to boos the volume and treble.

so, I ordered Seymour Duncan SMB-4A(alnico magnet) but I think it's not enough.

Should I replace the preamp? If I should, which one is good to my bass.

How about you?

your StingRays are also noisy like my one?

EMG / Duncan / Bartolini - and so on. please give me your advice.

Happy new year

Might be a very simple fix...

Like going to a different house/building and plugging your amp in there. Sounds like an electricity supply ground issue to me.

When I turn the volume up to the end, I can hardly play the bass because of the noise.

In that stage, if I boost the treble or middle, the volume of the noise is almost same with that of the played sound.

I've bought this bass at Midi and Sound in Korea which is the dealer of this country.

So, I asked them to fix the problem just to fail.

they don't know why my bass was so noisy, just answered me that another StingRay 4-strings have the same problem.

In other words, they say that the noise is the originality of the Stingray !!!

Can you accept the explanation???

So, Should I send my bass to U.S??

I really liked MusicMan Stingray and other instruments.

All of my band members use MusicMan instrumets.
- Two John Petrucci w/full option, one Luke, one Silhouette special w/full op.
- one Bongo fiver

and I have 3 StingRay (besides, It's all left-handed)

I am satisfied with the quality of the fiver.

But I am very disappointed with the StingRay 4-string.

please, I want somebody to help me with this problem.

I've mailed to her.

I've heard of her from the chief of the Midi and Sound.

I know she is very kind but, I think she can't fix this problem.

the chief mailed to her and Scott several times.

but she said to me she didn't get any answer.

Anyway, I hope that this problem will be fixed soon.

I am too tired because of the EXTREME noise.

Have you checked the wiring in the building where you play? Is there good grounding/earthing? You can find out with an electrical ground/earth test light that plugs into the wall. I have found that the Stingray 4 is more susceptible to wiring issues than other instruments, possibly because of its single pickup. This sounds like what you're describing, as I've also experienced this phenomenon with a Stingray 4. Especially if you have the same problem with multiple Stingrays.

Good idea there Oldtoe.

I'd also try changing the battery.

You never know.....

As I told before, my Stingray fiver is very quiet, while 4-string Stingray makes much noise.

If your word is correct, why my fiver is so quiet??

I purchased the bass a couple of years ago, and because of the noisce I couldn't plug the bass into the amp or something, as you konw, the battery is still alive.

I tried to contact with the customer service through the dealer of Korea but just to fail.

the person whom I contact is very kind .

they also tried to fix the bass but It didn't work.

Anyway, Thanks for the advice. Oldtoe and JB1.
you guys're very appreciated. ^-^

But my StingRay 'Kang-mi' is still too noisy.

I don't know what to do .

Sounds like a shielding/grounding problem.

Stingrays are usually very quiet, whoever told you otherwise is full of animal bi-product.

What are the noise characteristics: hum, crackly or other?

Have you gone thru the usual troubleshooting:

1. Try different basses. (you mentioned an SR5 but do you have access to another SR4 and does it have the same problem)

2. Try different cables.

3. Try different amps.

4. Try different outlets.

5. Try different buildings.

6. Try different grids. (this is an attempt at humour)

To reinforce what figjam said, anybody tells you that it just is noisy doesn't want to waste their time in trying to figure out what the real problem is.

I'd Bet you 99.9% It's a Power Issue. All I Play is these basses, and I do this 1 gig twice a Month and My Rays are sooooooo Noisey that i Have too roll the treble all the way Off. IT IS NOT MY BASS, IT'S THE CLUB, VERY BAD WIRING.

So Like someone else on the form just stated , I'd bet it's more of a Power issue then your bass. DJ

OK, DJ

If the Power is the cause of the problem, I don't know why my fiver is so quiet at the same Power.

the noise is like the hum noise of the single pickups, I think.

but the the noise of the passive jazz bass is much quieter than that of mine.

Is this a shield problem??

I will post the picture of the inner electronics of my bass in a few hours.

and thanks for your concern and advice.

The fiver uses a different pickup with a hum-cancelling coil. The Stingray pickup is a different animal. This would be the cause of the difference in humming. CHECK THE POWER. :)
