i used to break strings when i barely knew how to play. i knew very well how to make bass sounds that matched the songs musically, but i didn't know how to play the instrument.

now i'm fine. i replace the strings when they go dead. they never break.

Fairly often in my first few years...cheap basses with **** bridges plus a heavy right-handed technique.

Can't remember the last time I broke one...probably just cursed myself.

The remote possibility of breaking a string is probably one of the most common reasons for bringing backup basses to gigs - so it is important for that excuse (I mean reason).

I tried a couple sets of Fodera strings a few years ago, and both A-strings broke on a bass that has not had said problem before or since.

this is a tough story to explain but i'll try...

you know when you break a bass string they dont actually break into 2 pieces... the top windiing comes undone. ok, so i took off a broken G and started pulling the two ends to just watch the whole thing unwind... kind looks cool. then i started twisting it trying to break the wire in the core. the core finally broke and I didn't notice and gave the 2 ends a hard tug.... the wrapping unwound more, exposing the broken core (which I didnt see) and the core went straight into my palm. Not only that - it went in one part of my palm and out the other (it didnt go up to the other side of my hand).

it hurt really bad. looking at the damn thing and knowing all i could do was pull it back out sucked too.

true story

I've only broken one string, and that was when I was stretching them after I installed them. I couldn't imagine breaking a string during a gig, and I do slap a bit.

If I use anything less than 110/50's- I am in risk of breaking them.... I tend to pop really hard (probably bad technique)....

However I did break an e-string (110) whilst restringing before a gig a few weeks ago.... it was after a dozen or so beers... needless to say I was pretty annoyed at myself... it was lucky that I had an old one lying around that I could boil up.

Ok for all of us that have never broken a string...how many of you have cut a string too short when restringing?
