How often do you break strings?

Yup...I trim off all but about 4" off the tips.

Me too, but I run the string through the bridge and measure the length beyond the post (4" or so) then cut... Effective cure for the the "cutting too short" problem!

Ok for all of us that have never broken a string...how many of you have cut a string too short when restringing?

Never broke a string and never cut one too short. Not hard to do when you haven't had to change strings for the whole time you have played your bass.

I've broken three bass strings in 17 years. All of them E strings, all on different basses. Last one was December 2003.

Cutting them too short? Only once... thought the A string was the E. Alcohol-related.
