It's probably impossible to prevent Indonesians from demonstrating at the drop of a hat. Every morning our security advisers email me a list of planned demonstrations occurring in Jakarta that day. Usually there are around 10 demonstrations on the list, but they're just the "legal" ones that have Police permits. Throw in the illegal demonstrations like the one we had on the weekend, and the number is probably closer to 20 per day. The really nasty ones are after local soccer games, when teams from different provinces are playing - they bus in a few thousand fans from out of town, and all hell breaks lose. Just like British soccer louts but skinnier, and they don't need to drink lager to go stupid.

That's me. That video was taken just after we'd retreated to the top of the stairs after the Police Chief and 3 of his team tried to get us out through the crowd. We had much better luck the next day with 3 busloads of cops.
