I just got a Fully Loaded JP7 w/Piezo. I have a serious problem with buzzing when playing the Open Low E String and slight buzzing on the A. What confuses me is the fact that it is not buzzing anywhere on the fretboard at all - only when playing the open string. It seems to diminish when I apply pressure (in a certain direction) to the string in the area between the tuning peg and the nut. Any ideas? I appreciate any help!

i had the same issue on my jp6. turns out it was the string vibrating in the nut slot, due to me going from 10's to 9's (it comes stock from the factory with 10's).

sent it to jon and he put a new nut on, and it came back even better then the first time i got it...the back of the neck felt like glass  it was so smooth. not even mentioning the incredible setup he did.

when in doubt, call Customer Service, they'll hook you up.

Hmm... I don't think the nut slots are too low. I'll be honest I don't know too much about setting up guitars. I just play 'em! :) How could I look into that?

What a coincidence i have a simil problem with my JP7: all the low strings(B E A and some D)buzz when i play chord or solo, so i have to mute them all the time, its something to do with the Nut too?

Thanks in advance

you could try eyeballing it, comparing it to another guitar that isnt having this problem...but just to check, does it have 9's? if the nut was cut for 10's like it is from the factory, you can have some trouble if you go to 9's.

Bandit,
Nope still 10's. Just received it today so I didn't change anything. Everything looks cool to me as far as the nut compared to my other guitars but like I said I'm not too experienced in setups and stuff.

Yea I think I'm gonna have to do that. It's really bugging me especially since I tried to record a guitar track today with piezo and it was virtually impossible with this buzz. I'm gonna wait till after the weekend though. I need at least a few with it being that I just got it today and knowing I'll be without it for a while brings a tear to my eye. ;)

Just wondering what is the usual timeframe on "repairs/setups"? Just curious.

Thanks Jon!

It really depends on what I have to do to the instrument. When I don't need to order parts like a neck or body, the turn around time is a day or 2. I am guessing that all we need here is a setup, so it would be very quick.

With your right hand, depress each string one at a time at the 5th fret. While the string is depressed, look at the space between that string and the first fret wire.
If the string is touching the wire, your nut slot is definitely low.
That said, the lighter strings should be closer to the fretwire than the thicker strings. (This is because the thicker strings vibrate in a wider amplitude and thus need more clearance)
You can also use your left hand first finger to push the string down at the first fretwire to get a feel for the amount of clearance you actually have.

Note: Even if there is SLIGHT daylight between string and wire, there may still be buzzing-cutting a nut is a skill reserved for the competent tech or a WELL-practiced wannabe luthier;)- too low slots will give you buzzing, too high slots make first position chording uncomfortable and gives you intonation grief.

Okay, so I did a series of tests and come to find out that it IS in fact the string vibrating in the nut (like backdoor bandit's problem). I tested this by putting a VERY small piece of paper in between the string and nut slot. Low and behold... buzzing gone. Now it looks as if I'm still planning to send the guitar in though because I don't think having a piece of paper to prevent a noise is very cool, agreed? ;) Jongitarz, does this sound like the nut will have to be replaced?

Well, Jon I just now sent it out Next Day Air so it should be there tomorrow. I just put a fresh set of 10's on yesterday and the buzzing on the open Low E, A, and D strings is even more apparent (especially using Piezo). So I guess we'll see what you think the problem is; and from hearing what other people have said about you I have no doubt that you'll know what to do. Again, thanks for helping out thus far... I appreciate it.

Thanks again,

Mark
