Hello all,

I've had my JPX 7 string for a few months now, and I'm just not digging the bridge pickup in it. It could be the chambering that's giving it a characteristic not suiting for my playing style. It doesn't have enough bite on the low end. I also have a Majesty 7 string that I love, but I'm not sure if the Illuminator would work the same in the JPX7. Have any of you swapped pickups in this guitar?

I'm looking for a very tight sounding pickup for metal. Dare I say "djenty/progressive?" This particular axe stays in drop G. Thanks in advance for the advice.

Side note - I have had the Majesty in drop G before and it had a great tone in that tuning. I would like to get that same cutting, tight tone for my JPX. This is because the JPX has been slotted specifically for 10-64 strings. Thats why I don't use the Majesty in drop G instead.

1.) which is tighter between the Aftermath and Jugg? I mean, I like that "thumpy" rhythm sound.

2.) I believe I may try the Illuminator. Has anyone actually put one in the bridge of a JPX7? If so, what difference did you notice? Did it work well with the wood choice/size/chambering of this guitar?

Thanks for the replies guys

If your going for that djent sound bare knuckle pickups is the way to go. but I would think medium output pickups with a lot of upper midrange from any brand would do it.

UPDATE

I ended up picking up an Evolution for the bridge. It sounds exactly the way I want. The Evo in this guitar sounds much more balanced. The low end is tight and not boomy. The trade-off is that it's also more sterile than the Crunchlab. The wow factor on high-mids went away. The crunch lab is awesome, except for the bottom 2 strings. Another plus is that I have a buddy who is an electronics guru. He did a very clean install on the new pup.

Overall, I'm happy and won't look back. The Evo simply fits my playing style better. Heavy palm mutes cut through better with this new pickup, and it's not as noisy with high gain. I hope this helps someone else!

Thanks.. been watching this thread and hoping you would have tried the Illuminators and reported back ;) .. I have yet to hear of someone that put illuminators in an older JP and have been wondering if sounds more like the majesty...
Glad you found the tone you were looking for.

Honestly I was afraid I would have two guitars that sounded too similar. With the EVO, I have two guitars that have a tone suitable to my taste, but also different enough that I still want to play both of them. Neither my Majesty nor my JPX deserves to be a wall ornament just yet.
