On a tenuously-related note, a few years ago I was working as a barman in Oxford. We got a lot of tourists coming in, particularly Americans (nothing against Americans, obviously) who often ordered a disgusting concotion known as a "Black and Tan". I'd just finished explaining to one customer why he might get a funny reaction in some bars if they asked for one (the Black and Tans were a regiment of conscripted British prisoners who served in Ireland in the early 20th century and were, on the whole, pretty nasty to the Irish catholics... some people are still sensitive to that), when a group of American tourists came in and ordered "Irish Car Bombs" all round...
A number of years ago George Jones was playing in town.My wife was working at the hotel he was staying at and told him we were playing in a little bar just around the corner from where he was playing his concert. He gave us all tickets to the show and we passed along the invitation to come down after the concert. We were able to catch George's show before our gig. Most of the Jones Boys came down to the bar we were playing and they actually got up and jammed. They were deadly musicians and it was a joy to watch them cut loose. The bar was giving them free drinks and drink they did. Towards the end of the evening one of the owners told me that those "Yankees" were drinking him out of house and home. I had to say "don't ever , ever , refer to those guys as " Yankees" - they come from way below the Mason Dixon Line " Those would be fighting words where they come from.
