I'm the one that said the topic was old, etc. Maybe my posting was misleading, but my point wasn't that the thread was old - but that if nothing new was being added - Why bring it back to life? If you have questions regarding something, it's always been the policy of this forum to search first, ask second.

Since this thread's re-birth, nothing new has been contributed. That was my point and concern and is being proven before our eyes. All that's happened since is a pissing contest. One that I had no intentions to cause.

My apologies if anyone was offended. :)

Plus, it's just an internet forum. It's not the end of the world...

p.s. All this talk about discussion about the Fender Forum earlier... Well, the Fender Forum isn't owned by Fender. :p

Chris...That was not my quote...I was quoting Dave. I was confused by the stifling remark that was made in Daves post because nobody is stifling anything on this thread.

OK. Stifling was a poor choice of word and I unreservedly withdraw that remark. It's old age and senility creeping in.

Nuff said, now back to normality.

Yes, I see that now. My apologies.

I'll be honest, and I can be since I don't work for EB. There's no need to change out the pup. There, I said it. Well, unless you have several MM's... :D :D

I feel like this thread was over a year ago. If anyone has anything new to add to it, great! But to once again drag up the 'close-minded' issue, after a year, is not adding anything new to the discussion of after-market pickups.

I said this a year ago:

1. It's perfectly okay to ask questions about replacement pickups here. However, don't be surprised if someone, perhaps even a company employed person, perhaps a long-time member, perhaps a mod, reminds you that the bills here aren't paid by Seymour or Lane or any of the other perfectly wonderful pickup guys.

2. There are, in fact, other good places on the internet to discuss these pickups in detail. I don't think it's terribly unreasonable to keep this to a minimum here on the Ernie Ball Musicman Forum, you know?

3. If there is some new information to be added to the "this pickup versus that pickup" discussion, I would certainly welcome it.

4. Everyone take a deep breath. We're all on the same side here.

I will stand by that, even a year later. Let's not get into another p!ssing match, okay?

I like the original pups. EBMM has engineers that design, test and incorporate these pups into what I belive to be some of the best basses made. Change is not always good. Sometimes the original just can't be made better.

At risk of seeming sycophantic, I really like how fat the stingrays sound. I mean you can't take anything away from that original pickup design.

I haven't found anything that sounds fatter or deliverd that amount of midlow growl - although I haven't tried the nordstrand or aero designs yet.

Speaking of MM Replacement pickups

Here is my deal:
I have an Ernie Ball 4 string Stingray that I bought used. I recently found out that the previous owner used it as a project bass. He basically replaced the preamp with an Aguilar 2 band EQ and with Basslines MM pickups. The bass sounds good...but it doesn't have that Stingray punch.
I am looking for suggestions on how to get the Bass I purchased back to it's factory standards or at least get it as close to that Louis Johnson sound. I contacted EB, but they do not sell to the public directly nor do they honor doing repairs.
Any constructive help would be appreciated.
Thanks!

While it may not be the quickest method, you're probably going to have to watch eBay. Pickups and preamps DO surface occasionally; you just have to be patient. Don't know about the cosmetic condition of your bass, but you could also look for a trashed Stingray, salvage the electronics and then eBay the carcass.
