Hi EB Customer Service,

Can you tell me about my new bass, serial # 26089. If you have original finish & pickguard info, that would be great.

Gracias

x, sorry - this one is so old, the only info we have is that it was built on 9/08/88. We do know that it was shipped to GC #114 in Fountain Valley, CA.

Thanks Dan. It's a Sabre, I just cleaned it up, and the body is stamped & penciled August '88 (& 'nat' for natural), the neck late July '88.

Hi Dan,

Please tell me about my bass #B022857.
I'd appreciate it if you could tell what the original pick guard colour was.

Thanks,
David

David...is it a Pre-EB or an EB Bass? That serial could belong to either (Pre-EB bridges were used on some early EBs).

Very very early EBs didn't have the name "Ernie Ball" included on the headstock logo. A Pre-EB has a slab body with the string retainer on the D&G strings. The EB has the waist contour with the retainer on the A&D.

There is no data base for the Pre-EBs nor is there one for most of the Ernie Ball "Bxxxxxx" serials (except for the 100th Anni NAMM Basses).

If it's a Pre-EB it will be c. 1983. If an EB it will be either 1985 or 86. The EBs have the pre-amps dated (on rear of one of the control pots) but I don't think they commenced doing that untill c. 1987. You could be lucky.

Dates are located on the neck heel and in the neck pocket but the neck has to be removed to view them.

As to pickguards, the late Pre-EBs were Black or Clear. I've seen White, Clear and Black on the early EBs (mainly Black).

Thanks Gav.

Its an early EBMM. It has the decal, 4 bolt neck and the contouring.

The body looks like poplar as it doesn't have the grain of ash or alder.
This seems to be an interesting wood choice for the trans red finish.

I used your great site:cool: to approximatly date it as 1985 and confirmed it by looking at the neck pocket but was wondering what EBMM could tell me from their records.

The bridge puzzles me. If it was a pre EBMM left over it doesn't have through the body stringing. The bridge is top load only.

Thanks again,
David

Joey, according to the serial number you provided, your StingRay was completed on 10/26/01 and was shipped to Margarida Music in Puerto Rico. However, the finish is supposed to be a Blue Dawn, maple fretboard and a white pearloid guard. Blue Dawn finishes looked like this: http://www.ernieball.com/site/flyers/le2007.html

If that doesn't seem right, you want to check the serial number again?

BBell, your Sterling was completed on 4/20/95. Though it may have a cherry flavor, the actual finish at that time was known as simply Sunburst. Now we call that same finish Honeyburst. The actual finish we know as Cherryburst wasn't offered until summer 2002.

The thing about the Sunburst finish, in particular, that I have noticed - it has changed through the years. Our 'burst finishes are all hand-painted, so a lot of how it turns out depends on when it was made and who actually painted the instrument.

At any rate, a beautiful bass I am sure!

David, how are ya man? Nice find on this bass! A little-known fact (unless you frequent Gav's website) is that the later (I think from '82 on, correct me if I am wrong, Gav)) pre-EB Music Man basses did not use STTB, but instead a top-load bridge like we use now, and also used a 4-bolt neckplate. The early EBMMs just continued that, later redesigning the bridge and using a 6-bolt neckplate. Early EBMM's resemble the last few years of pre-EB MM in a few ways, as the changes that were made to the StingRays did not occur overnight.

Unfortunately, another similarity is that our database does not have serial number info for the first few years of EBMM instruments, but it sounds like you've narrowed it down well enough.

strummer, very cool that you decided to find out more about your Bongo 5 HS Dargie! It was built on 04/25/07 and shipped to Bass Central.

Dan

Thanks Dan, yeah I thought I'd get my signature in order lol:) But I was surprised not to find the bass here already, as I got it second hand. Yeah, had no funds when the Dargies were produced, but it's all good now:D

Hey guys...been a while since I last dropped in.

Picked up a nice '06 Ltd. Ed. SR4-H/S in trade on Monday.

Haven't snapped shots yet, but I'll get one off to send to Gav by the weekend or when the weather clears up...whichever is first.

Serial #E53545.

Got lots of compliments on the tone at last nights local jam!

Thanks, Dan! I promise to post a pic or two...waiting for sunlight.

It's funny, I remember taking my new cruiser out on that very day on a ride through the Santa Cruz Mountains with another bass player buddy of mine.
