StingRay Bass pre EB year

My MM natural finish, 3 bolt Stingray bass has serial #: B006716 and the (R) symbol on the headstock. I believe this could be a 1977 - 1979 production model. Can anyone pinpoint the actual year this guitar may have been made?

Overtime,

your Black Onyx Sterling was completed on 11/5/02 and was originally sent to Drum City Guitarland.

Cool -

jacksonmoon,

When Ernie Ball acquired Music Man in 1984, unfortunately we did not get
any of the serial number records. All we can tell you about the
production date of your pre-Ernie Ball StingRay is that it was built
sometime between 1976 and 1984, with the majority of them made circa
1977-1980.

There is Gav's site that many people have found useful for reference:
http://myweb.ecomplanet.com/TOWN8019/mycustompage0004.htm
(This website is not supported nor endorsed by Ernie Ball/Music Man)

Hope that helps!

Hi jacksonmoon.

The only way to accurately date your Bass is to view the dates located on the neck heel and in the body pocket. In order to do this, the neck would have to be removed. If you've never done so before, I strongly suggest you have a luthier do it for you or, at least, seek the advice from some one who has.

In the event of the neck not being removed, a partial dating aid would be to unscrew the crescent-moon control plate and view the date codes stamped on the sides of the vol, treble and bass pots. They are only the manufacture dates of the pots themselves and not the date of the pre-amp. Pots can pre-date the Bass by up to a year or two, but it will at least give a "not-before-date" for your Bass. For example, a code of "1377726" would indicate (working backwards) the 26th week ("26") of 1977 ("77") ie June 1977.

While the control plate is off, view the pre-amp circuit board. Prior to 1979, it was coated in black epoxy. The epoxy was deleted from boards made in 1979.

The encircled "R" (registered) appears to have been a feature added to the headstock logo from circa 2nd half of 1977.

Although Pre-EB serials can sometimes be well out of chronological order, B006716 would, in the main, indicate a Bass manufactured in 1978.

Can I please get the DOB for my new StingRay, serial # E55207. Does the serial number supply any other information other than the DOB? If so, could you relay that information as well. Thanks.

E42281. Limited edition is stamped on the neck plate.

Think it is 04/05. Wonder how many were made?

Thanks

chris
