Hey I recently bought a Stingray 5 fretless at 30th st guitars in NYC.
serial 53487. I was wondering if it was originaly fretless, and what the body color is called? I cant seem to find it anywhere and wonder if its refinished?
great sounding beast, I tried about 10 other Rays and this was the one. It had a smoother treble EQ than any other one. And the action was dead perfect.

Calaveras, yes, Your StingRay 5 was originally fretless, but here is the curious thing - it would seem the lines were added later as this bass originally went out as an unlined fretless. Here's how to tell: If the side dots are on the fret markers, it was originally a fretless unlined (it is highly doubtful they could have been moved). If they are in between "frets" like a fretted bass (as was pointed out by Strummer), it was originally lined fretless. It is possible the necks could have been swapped (lined for unlined) at some point.

No, I do not think that it is refinished, In the 90's our trans red was darker, almost a crimson red, and this one would have an alder body. obviously the pickguard was added after the fact as we did not offer abalone pickguards until 2000 or so.

Your bass was made on 3/11/93 and shipped to Sam Ash in Huntington Station, NY. Nice! ;)

I added the Abalone PG myself last week. I think it looks great with the red finish.
About the fretless. Its got fret dots in between the lines like a fretted. But there are smaller filled in dots just to their right?!
Oh also its set up EADGC with a nut to match.
HMMM
On a side note, this bass appears to have been made on my younger sisters 22nd birthday!

Oh here is an extreme PG closeup, I just love it that much. :D
you can also see the "extra dots" in this pic pretty well

It does appear that the dots have been altered, and the "fretlines" don't look like ones from the factory - they appear to be a bit darker than the ones we put on. And certainly, the database records bear out that this neck has been altered to have lines, although I have to admit it appears to be a decent job - at least as much as is apparent two-dimensionally.

And I agree with you - I think the abalone pickguard dresses it up nicely.

If it makes you happy and you can play it enjoy having a one off. That is one pretty bass.

Hi,

Info on this Sterling please..... F08028

Thanks!

jkbass,

This is a Sterling Black Onyx bass that was one of our first Limited runs, and these were all pretty much made in October 2002. This one was made on the 24th. We only made 150 of these, and they all had their own numbers hand-written on the back - ex. 41/150 (which would mean #41 of the 150) or whatever. It has all-black hardware (which was a first for us) right down to the pole pieces on the pickup and a black-finished neck and an ebony fretboard.

It's hard to believe, but there are still a few dealers who have one of these black beauties in stock brand new waiting for some lucky player to own them. ;)

Hi Dan.

Can you help with these please:

*Silhouette Bass G08003

And

*Silhouette (Guitar...I don't think it's a Bass???) 96797.

Cheers.

Gav,

Ser# G08003 is a Silhouette Bass in Metal Flake Green finish. The production date was 10/20/99 and it was originally sent to Dan's Guitars in Hawaii.

Serial # 96797 identifies as one of the first Silhouette Special guitars we produced, although it did not yet have the word "Special" on the headstock. This one has a Pearl Green finish, maple neck, Wilkinson trem (we did not yet offer these without a tremolo), Grover locking tuners, and a white pearloid pickguard. The production date: 6/27/95. It was originally sent to Mid-Atlantic Music In Delaware, now OOB.

This must be Green Day! :D :D

Bucky, your bass was manufactured on 4/17/02 and originally was shipped to Long & McQuade in North York, Ontario. The finish was called Autumn Redburst.

BB, your bass was built on 8/13/97. For a brief time we used the "D" prefix before the "E" series started. Our database shows it as a Trans Red with a rosewood fretboard.

Cool -
