If the side dots are on the fret markers, it has always been a fretless (or someone moved them).
If they are in between "frets" it was originally fretted.

Calaveras said:Hey I recently bought a Stingray 5 fretless at 30th st guitars in NYC.
serial 53487. I was wondering if it was originaly fretless, and what the body color is called? I cant seem to find it anywhere and wonder if its refinished?
great sounding beast, I tried about 10 other Rays and this was the one. It had a smoother treble EQ than any other one. And the action was dead perfect.
I added the Abalone PG myself last week. I think it looks great with the red finish.5Stringer said:Calaveras, yes, Your StingRay 5 was originally fretless, but here is the curious thing - it would seem the lines were added later as this bass originally went out as an unlined fretless. Here's how to tell: If the side dots are on the fret markers, it was originally a fretless unlined (it is highly doubtful they could have been moved). If they are in between "frets" like a fretted bass (as was pointed out by Strummer), it was originally lined fretless. It is possible the necks could have been swapped (lined for unlined) at some point.
No, I do not think that it is refinished, In the 90's our trans red was darker, almost a crimson red, and this one would have an alder body. obviously the pickguard was added after the fact as we did not offer abalone pickguards until 2000 or so.
Your bass was made on 3/11/93 and shipped to Sam Ash in Huntington Station, NY. Nice!![]()
