>>>>in 1997 we switched from putting the serial number on the bridges of the basses to putting them on the neck plates. So if your serial number isn't on the neck plate, it is on the bridge, and it was built in 1997 or before.

Dan, my understanding is that the serials to the neck plate came about in early 1998!!??? Is that a typo above or have I got it wrong

No, you're probably right .... it wasn't like it all happened at once. Once the decision was made to switch the serial numbers to the neckplates, we still had to use up the remaining bridges with the serial numbers, and truthfully the time line is a little sketchy on that one. Plus my memory is a little fuzzy on the exact times. It wasn't the same day for all of the basses, it was done as a matter of course for the Sterling, StingRay and SR5 as we went through those old bridges with the serial numbers on them. I was thinking late '97 but early '98 sounds better.

Thanks, Gav!

Gav,

Here's what our records show: Production date 7/8/98 - StingRay, translucent Teal fretless lined 3EQ, originally shipped to our UK distributor, Strings & Things Ltd.

Cheers back!

Jay,

Your piezo-equipped Sterling was completed om 12/12/00 and the wood used in the body is almost certainly ash, but there is a small chance it could be made of poplar. The neck of course is solid rock maple. The finish on your bass is called Metal Flake Green and the pickguard was tortoise shell. Nice bass! ;)

All reet!

brian, welcome!

your 2-EQ StingRay was completed on 8/8/00 and has a black finish. The body wood we used would have been ash or poplar. The neck is maple with a rosewood fretboard.

SR5 fretless

Hey I recently bought a Stingray 5 fretless at 30th st guitars in NYC.
serial 53487. I was wondering if it was originaly fretless, and what the body color is called? I cant seem to find it anywhere and wonder if its refinished?
ray11.jpg

great sounding beast, I tried about 10 other Rays and this was the one. It had a smoother treble EQ than any other one. And the action was dead perfect.
