Neck sizes

Just curious if anybody had trouble adjusting to the 1 5/8 nut width on music man guitars after playing Strats or Les pauls. The reason I ask is that my elbow and hand has been hurting a lot and I used my strat the other day and it didn't quite hurt as much and I think it may just be a coincidence cause i really don't want to stop using my y2d it sounds why to good and looks way to nice.
Sometimes the y2d neck does seem small but most times it feels so comfortable , it could be me just over analyzing this whole thing.

I have no problem going back and forth on guitars with different nut widths. Sometimes chording in the first position with a 1 5/8 nut width can be a little trying, but I get use to it after a while.

I have not had any pain in my hands though. Do you have big hands?

I find the opposite - bigger necks flare up some tendinitis in my left arm/elbow....

maybe you should try a different angle and strap length with the Y2D.
on the Y2D the edges where the fretboard comes together with the neck, feel a bit more edgy as on a strat, which is more rounded in this area. but you should get used to it. just try to hand the guitar higher or deeper on the strap.
hope you´ll find a good position for your hands on the Y2D neck.

btw. the Y2D changed my style of playing a bit. never played with my thumb on the low e-string, but with the 1 5/8 nut and the neck shape, i got used to this style of chord playing. the funny thing about it is the fact, that the Steve Morse guitar made my playing technique become more like the Steve Morse style technique.

I have a reflex game changer, don't like the neck I'm looking for a luthier to do me a neck with a wider nut, MM doesn't do necks for regular people. A lot of people don't buy MM guitars because of the neck. It's just a personal taste. Love the game changer possibilities, wish it has pickups without that mid range bump.
If you like the guitar deal with the neck if you can't I'm sure you will find someone happy to take it.

I never had a problem, in fact just the opposite. Once I started paying EBMM my strat seemed unwieldy and awkward in comparison. Over the years I can think of quite a few people here who had initial difficulty getting used to certain EBMM necks, like the v-shape of the Luke neck as one example, but most of them quickly adjusted and never looked back. Give it a little more time. Logically, if I can go from an electric guitar to a mandolin without any difficulty, going from one guitar to another shouldn't pose any serious issues.

+1 Not just the neck but the whole balance of EBMM instruments, way the slightly smaller bodies hang from the strap, are different enough that it subtly changes our playing position and how our arms and hands meet the instrument. (Same thing with Les Pauls vs Strats in fact but that seems so obvious that nobody ever thinks about it).

A complete OT remark - I always marveled at how Steve Howe (back in the day) could masterfully play a show almost using a different guitar for each song, and guitars that were often hugely different sizes, neck profiles, body styles etc.

I do have trouble going from vastly different necks unless I practice on them a lot. I always take 2 guitars to every gig and have "pairs" of them which go well together but still give me some tonal variety.

The only neck that I really have trouble with in my EBMM guitars is the 25th - mine is large and bulky by comparison. I wish I was more comfy on it, because it sounds killer....

Not often we hear that! Usually it's the exact opposite!

But you are absolutely correct, it's all about personal taste. BTW, you can put any pickups you like in the Game Changer.

I know what you mean...just a matter of time.I know a couple of fellas with the biggest,meatest hands and fingers...and they played the daylights out of their one and only guitar..no problems...small necks..they just didn*t know any better....

I love the feel of he neck and how balanced the guitar feels , and the tone just seems more focused then any other guitar I have ever played.
Is the y2d neck the thinnest of the music man guitars?

Gio, the JP is the widest at the first fret while the rest are all the same width. The JP also has the least depth at the first fret. I find the y2d to be somewhere between the JP and Axis. Spud did a neck profile thread a while ago detailing the other models.

Ive got very large hands and have no problem at all with ebmm necks, i love the feel and have had no pain. I also agree that larger neck widths can be more painful for me too.

I cannot play the 1-5/8th nuts and sold all my Music Man guitars.

Still have 2 Music Man basses.

The biggest annoyance is that the only guitar with a wider nut, the JP, has a wider nut but the string spacing is right back where it would be with a 1-5/8th nut. Granted you can have a new nut cut, but seriously, not the way to go.

I really believe that one's neck size/shape preference is a combination of hand size, left hand technique and familiarity. Despite being a pencil pusher, I have the hands of a blacksmith. Still, I have been able to adjust to pretty much every neck shape and size under the sun. My preferred neck is a medium deep C-shape with a 43mm nut width (around 1 11/16"), yet I get on really well with any neck with a bit of girth to it... Sadly, that leaves out the JP from my list of options, despite it having my favourite features of any EBMM, but as the old saying goes: you can't please all the people all the time.

Well, MM is the only manufacturer so stubborn they don't offer a single guitar with wider string spacing. So you while you can't please all you could please a lot more.

A Darklord has a fatter neck than the other I think.
While I like a big neck, my AL mm-90 is fine to play.

I started this thread to discuss neck sizes and the pain I was having in my elbow.
This does not need to turn into a bashing of music because they dont offer different neck sizes.
They aren't stubborn it's what they make , so if it's going to turn into a bashing thread please Dr Kev or Beej close this down.
If not we can all continues our neck size discussion.
