I vote for UVPete!

This is awesome!

Can you write me in for the presidency?

This thread has been awesome.

I might add that the kids of today (and that goes up to say... 25 year olds) not only will not take responsibilty of their actions, but they have the most insane sense of entitlement.

Why am I fiscally conservative (and socially liberal)?

Becuase when I was in medical school in philadelphia there was this chinese lady who ran a chinese food truck. She would be there at 4 in the morning until 8 at night every day rain, shine or hot as hell summer day in Philly. You just knew that her kids were at home putting that work ethic into their school work. And in one generation you have mom coming off the boat and working her ass off... kids going to school and working their assess off and going to Harvard, then Harvard Law/Buisness School/ Medical School-- and Voila-- the american dream.

These people have no illusions as to what it takes to succeed in this country. You work your ass off.

But no one wants to do that anymore. Gentlemen, we are in the middle of the decline of western civilization. The most popular operation we are doing now at the hospital? The FAT PASS (Gastric Bypass). People who do not have the self control to stop eating, so they have their stomach turned into the size of a golf ball so that they wretch if they try to eat too much. I think its nuts.

Anyhow, for more details on gluttony, laziness and the decline of a civilization, see ancient Rome for details.

Kids are way too empowered these days. I propose all kids be smacked in the face hard, regardless of whether or not they have ADD or ADHD, which, as Dr. Uvapete says, is a load of bull. Spare the rod - get a bigger one. SMACK!

right on man!

if the glove don't fit, then you've got to hit (the kid)

ok for the record I do not advocate "beating" your children. But this movement that came about in the last 20 years that you should not spank your kids is just the biggest load of crap since.... I don't know..... something.

but it drives me crazy to see these people out there with kids acting out and misbehaving and throwing out these hollow threats that the kids know dont mean anything, becuase Mom or Dad never really follows through. Or "Ok, take away my xbox. See if I care. I've got a gameboy in my room anyhow!"

Smack em upside the head! They'll listen! Basspastor-- doesn't the bible say something about this?

My wife says she won't let me smack my boys upside the head. Seeing that they are only 1 year old its probably a good thing. One of them falls and hits his head every day anyhow, so he doesn't need any more brain damage. Every time it happens I picture his IQ dropping just a few points, and the final level of his education dropping a little bit. I think he is at fry guy right now.

Kids aren't encouraged to think for themselves or use any imagination anymore. Everything is spoon feed to them. TV, Radio, Music, Video games, Magazines and Movies all feed them a constant stream of superficial crap, bad values, instant gratification and misinformation.

Had a run in with some kids a few months back, out at the movies with my wife. I asked one them to please move his bike out of the way so we can pass by. Kid challenged me!! He was about 14 years old. I finally kicked his bike out of the way. He threatened to go get his gun and kill me! Little did he know I had the drop on him. It is that kind of world. No respect! aahhh!!!

I totally agree with what everyone above this post has wrote. Many kids (not all) need a good beating these days because they are so disrespectful. My dad whooped me good a couple of times, and i didn't turn out any worse for the wear, and I didn't even think about suing my folks. Kids these days...whattya gonna do?

If you're a kid on this board, do yourself a favor. Kick yourself in the @ss every now and then if you need it, read enough to know what's going on around you, respect old people and learn some Beatles.

My generation (I'm 47) has by and large done an awful job of raising their children. I am not going to be one of those people. I love my son enough to smack him upside the head if he needs it, and that is what the world is really like.

I will provide for him the many things that were never provided to me. My parents didn't have enough money to buy me nice instruments, and since my mom's family were all musicians, they really didn't want to encourage me too much. Luckily, I was self-motivating.

But nothing is ever really free. If he wants the Fender Bullet bass that's already in the closet for him, he'll have to first learn the stuff that took me forever to figure out on my own. Poor kid.

But he won't be a useless citizen, I promise you that.

Mark 13:12 Children will rebel against their parents...
Eph. 6:1 Children obey your parents...
I Tim.3:4 ....and see that his children obey him...
Dt. 4: 9... teach them to your children...
.
Spare the rod, spoil the child..
If the world would turn from it's carnal ways and call upon the name of the Almighty God we would not have all these problems. The key word is "IF"
There are so many scripture along this subject I could preach about it the rest of my life... I could go on and on but I'm sure their are some that would rather I didn't.
I do have grandchildren and I warned my children about spoiling their children,
the answers were we want them to have..., yes they have..., and now guess whom is paying.

We're not saying ALL kids. We're saying that it is the general attitude these days.
If you think this doesn't apply to you, then you are one of the foruntate kids to have good, responsible parents.

Now go practice your bass lessons!

Shaver, I'm not at all sure what you're talking about here. I'll go back and look again and see if anyone had something derogatory to say to you or about you, but I certainly wasn't aiming your way. It was my feeling that people were speaking in general terms about SOME kids and about the way SOME people raised their children.

I know what I said, which was this. (Read it again if you have to.)

"If you're a kid on this board, do yourself a favor. Kick yourself in the @ss every now and then if you need it, read enough to know what's going on around you, respect old people and learn some Beatles."

Note the 'if you need it' part. It was just general advice to anyone. I can say with some authority that I didn't have you in mind, and in fact, doubt very seriously if I have ever been anything but nice to you. Why would I begin now to be anything but your internet pal?

By the way, I appreciate you reporting the post as offensive. I mean, you do know who gets those messages, right? That would be me.

I guess in order to avoid any further controversy, I'll leave this open long enough for you to read this and then delete the thread. People sure are touchy sometimes, but again - this wasn't about you.

Put your foot down about what?

The fact is that way too many parents do a terrible job of parenting. Those children at best turn out to be difficult and at worst end up criminals. This is nothing new. It's been going on as long as humans have been reproducing.

In fact, my parents did a HORRIBLE job of raising me. I have to be very careful (and kick myself in the @ss when I need it) with my own child, because I am determined to NOT repeat those mistakes.

Life gives you options. You can go the easy route, let nature and nurture have their way with you and be near carbon copies of your parents, or you can learn enough to turn away from the bad example.

BTW, I'm using "you" in the colloquial sense here, not specifically talking about YOU.

I'll tell you what. You read back through this, and if you still feel it's somehow pointed at you or out of line with common sense, say the word and I'll delete it.

No sarcasm here, man.

You say the word, I delete. I feel strongly that everyone who makes a positive contribution here should have a say in how things go.
