So, all those EVH's and Axi...what kind of amp do you typically play them through? I haven't personally given the Axis a fair shot...I've only played one once, through a Mesa Stiletto Ace 1 x 12" combo, and although I liked the feel of the neck, it sounded far to bright for my liking, even when using the neck pickup. Are these just overly bright guitars, or have I given up on this model prematurely?
 
I haven't played an Axis, but I've owned two Axis Super Sports, so this may not be a fair comparison. Having said that, I've never felt that the Axis SS was bright. However, I've heard criticisms of the Ace as being a bright amp, going into ice pick territory if not dialed in right, so maybe it was the amp you didn't like rather than the guitar.

Isn't life weird! ! I just bought this guitar back. I owned it from 1997 or so until 2010 then basically loaned it out to a couple people .... or I may as well have. I just found it on ebay and bought it back. I hope it's still as minty as when I sold it. THIS guitar was the tone monster of all the Axis guitars I've been through, that's why I decided to grab it again. :)

Had one for a bit. Great axe, neck was too skinny for me...

I think he has changed that recently. My guitar is listed as having a Standard neck carve and it feels close to the Vintage C Medium neck on my Suhr; definitely not tiny. I get the impression that the standard neck carve used to be more like Suhr's even C slim carve.

here´s my "new" EVH. Serial-no. 80118
Has some dings and dongs and some playwear but the neck is absolutely amazing. Sold my PRS Cst22 to buy it and didn´t regret it.

yeah, the dude that sold that to me regretted it I think for a long while ..... he bugged me for a year to buy it back and finally I sold it back ..... I really didn't want to because it did have the most killer top on the planet!! but he's happy now.

That makes sense, seeing as how I only first started caring about tone when I heard John Petrucci's playing for the first time, which, I don't recall what it was specifically, but I'm sure it was played through the 6L6GC power section of a Mesa, and I do recall it sounding much more pleasant (to me) as compared to the previous guitar tones I was used to (old Metallica, Van Halen, Led Zeppelin, with their EL34 Marshall Plexis). You have officially convinced me to keep my mind open on the Axis in the future.

They're Fender strings 150XL Pure Nickel, 9-40. Ed's old gauge, not sure if he's still using it. I switch between those and Super Slinky's, and sometimes Hybrid Slinky's. Gonna try Power Slinky's next, just for the hell of it.
