The only 7 string guitar with a high A I remember was a prototype ESP that George Lynch had made years ago. As far as I remember, a friend of mine bought it from him and modified it to low B - I haven't heard from my friend for a while so can't check if he still has it or not.

I've been an almost dedicated 7 string player for about 5 years now. I still play 6's, but I prefer 7's for flexability and chordal/scalar possibilities.

Raz or any other folks, have you tried the low A tuning like the jazzers? I have experimented with both A and B. I've found bar-chording to be easier with the B tuning. However, the A opens up other interesting sounds such as octave runs using the A (fifth string).
I was simply interested in others' experiences.

Drop A...some times drop the B to A and the E to D and leave the rest the same...
Some times I'd tune UP...and have some drone strings going on...cool stuff.

7 string considerations
I have a few Petrucci guitars. One is a 7 string. I dumped my 2 Ibanez 7 string guitars...a 7620 and a presige XL model. The craftsmanship was not very go on either one. Any way...there are sublte but important differences when playing the seven string. One I noticed when I went to work practicing scales and modes and then on to soloing with it. The extra string adds to the width of the area you need to mute when playing. This takes a little doing but does come naturally after a time. I use high gain amps like a Mesa Recto and a 5150. This muting can become an issue when playing intricate lines. If you are not used to the 7 string...alot of noise can leak out of your playing at first. The other small thing is the string tension. Because there is a floating bridge and an added low B, a .056, this added tension is picked up across the other string and results in a stiffer feel when playing. Bends require a bit more "oomph". While these things seem small, and they are, do just think that if you play for a few minutes your ready for the studio...I made that error but very quickly learned to respect the 7 string as its own animal. Now I love it more than ever...in a different way. Cheers!
