I cut the plain end and lock in into the Floyd, then feed the ball end under the tension bar so as to not scratch the finish, then leave some slack for a couple windings around the tuning key and cut the ball off.

I know the other way is easier, but I don't like the looks of it (sorry) and think I get tidier job.

I string with the plain end into the headstock like you do, but I only leave a little wrapped, so I cut off about six inches with the ball attached.

It's worth it's weight in gold!

In fact, just yesterday during a song, my 6th string broke at the saddle (unusual for this string) @15 seconds into the song. I was able to crack the nut clamp & string block screw, cut off @ 3/16 off the broken end, bring new string down the pike, retighten all and finish the song with @ 1/3 left!!

And, if you have practice guitars that you allow string life to have indefinite extention on, then it's the perfect way to get full use of strings (up to 2 or 3 breaks!)
