Hey Figgy and Strummer,

Which of your suggestions do you think sound the "warmest" without being too "colored"? Hey, if you saw the thread that used the word "attackiness" and you think I'm headin' there, slam me...

Ed

Hi Ed
For uncolored, forget Trace Elliot. Also forget most Ashdowns, except the Lab series.
The MarkBass 503 should be right up your alley.
The EBS Fafner should also do the trick, but I think those are rather expensive in the UK?

I also forgot to recommend my own amp, Aguilar AG500. Light, powerful and SWEET!

If you believe the Peavey crowd, I will sell you a Peavey Pax preamp (2 ch tube/ss whith lots of eq and stuff) for 50£ + shipping.

My SVT CL is way warmer than my Ashdown ABM. My Markbass is the punch machine! My best sounding amp to my ears is my Ampeg B-18-N, but it is way too under powered for live gigs

For real world gigs I personally think MarkBass is he suff. :D

Lisa, there is a REASON we threw a load of people out of the UK to Australia many years ago ;)

And they keep coming in boatloads, even today. There's no shortage of Brits wading in the surf with their trousers rolled up to their knees and a hankie on their head with knots tied at the four corners, even though they have to pay their own fare these days.

That's not possible. You live in Kansas. I've been to Kansas. I don't remember any hills. Just lots and lots of wheat.

I didn't grow up in Kansas so you are wrong. I migrated here.

And Aussie Mark. are you ready for a beer drinker that can kick some
Aussie ass when it comes to beer drinking? I kinda of like Oz. I may fit in there just fine.

The one thing this tom doesn't do is bull****. I always tell it like I see it and how it is at present.

I once owned a Peavey Classic tweed and I just last month replaced the Peavey Basic 40 someone sold me used when I was 16. The truth is out.

.... now what am I going to do with this old Peavey Basic 40. My buddy did put a Force speaker in it a few years back which dramatically changed the sound for the better but I can't get a nickel for this amp. I should take the Force speaker out and sell it.

For "warm and uncolored", I haven't found much better than the Mesa 400+. Surprised nobody suggested it to you yet:confused:

You sure about uncolored for the 400? I'm no expert on that amp, having never used it, but I've heard it colors the tone a lot.

It's certainly the cleanest tube amp i've ever used. Or perhaps, I don't know what the hell i'm talking about:D
I should add that you can get many different sounds from this amp. However, try setting the eq to bass-2, Mid 8or9, and treble about 2 with the sliders off...... sounds very transparent to my ears. YMMV.

I'd definitely defer to your opinion over mine, partially because of the fact that you use one and I do not :D

I've always used and loved Trace Elliot with my StingRays. There are "clearer" amps out there but they don't seem to have the same punch as the TE, and the more vintage amps like Ampeg just sound too warm to my ears.

If I still lived in the UK I'd pick up some older Trace Elliot gear. I only wish it was that cheap over here in the US. (I have a 300W SMX head and a 2x15, both slightly pre-Gibson)

For those of us who were lucky enough to buy them and smart enough to keep them; set flat, the AH250/1518 is a pretty basic part of my SR5/piezo reference sound.

I have other gear, and I'm still on the lookout for modern, light weight equipment with similar tone qualities for easier handling to/from quiet environments; but never to replace the TE.

I have an Eden WT400 and Bergantino HT112/EX112 rig for portability, but I just couldn't do without my Trace rig.
