Got my flats today! I have to say that they were pretty close to what I was hoping they would be. I thought I was gonna sacrifice alot of sustain for the added bump in the low end, but to my suprise didn't seem to lose any. And I love the fact that there is no string noise when sliding up or down the string! The only scare I ran in to was my d strings windings unraveled and slipped on the tuner when I installed it. I find this funny because it was the only string that I didnt cut. I ended up having to cut it a little to get past the bad spot and it happened again! So I took the very end of the string and made a tiny loop in it before I rewound it on the post and it looks like its going to work ok. All in all Im extremely pleased with the strings!! Looks like im gonna be a flats player for awhile!

John

Edit: When you guys first install your flats, do they have this black powder like substance on them? After I installed mine, my hands were completely black. I seem to have gotten most of it off the strings though with a dry cloth.

I hate hearing that someone wont change their strings for 10 years......BOOOOO HOOOO

i change strings a lot if that helps pops. i love the brightness of stainless... as soon as the bling is bellow my minimum level i slap on a new set... usually a couple weeks.

tho... being a bit lazy and having 6 basses now i end up grabbing another bass instead and eventually end up running to the store to buy 10 sets.

No dirt at all on mine, at least not that I noticed. I did have pretty much that same problem with my G string, but I had cut it. The replacement went on uncut with no problems. You might want to call customer service - they were very interested in my problem, to the point of asking that I send the string in for inspection . . . .

Hmm I think I recall something like that when I was stringing my Bongo up with flats. IIRC I didn't get too much on my fingers. I ended up with more blue powder-ish stuff on my fingers from the wrappings instead.

I have had flats that seemed to have the ability to make fingers black when they were first put on. Doesn't last too long before whatever it is wears off.

Its cool its probably my own fault. Besides they probably wouldnt be able to tell anything since I had to recut it and rig it to make it work. However I wonder If there is a place you can buy Flats in singles just in case this one does decide to let go?

Had the blue powder stuff too, but this is black almost like sometype of tarnish. Again this is not a big deal. The more I play them the less black my fingers get so I must be wearing it off.

Customer service can do that too - they sent me a couple, invoiced as singles. These things are hard enough to find in sets (at least around here . . . ) so I don't know where else you would find singles.

Let me guess D'Addario Chromes? They are the only flats I tried with the problem. It just adds to the funk.:p

If the stuff bothers you switch to "ERNIE BALL FLATWOUNDS", like I did.:D How's that for a plug?

Umm these are EB flatwounds:D But it doesn't bother me I was just curious if others had experienced this with flats. I am REALLY happy with the strings.

BTW I'm not much of a slapper, but I slapped a little with these strings today and I personally love the way they sound when slapped.

Don't worry Poppa, some of us guitards change strings weekly! We'll keep you supplied with Ketel One and meats for your outdoor kitchen! :D

I got into that habit years ago. A good friend of mine who is probably one of the best guitarists I've ever heard.. he used to buy Super Slinky strings by the box and change them every couple of days. I had never heard of anyone buying strings in such quantities before, most guys I knew changed strings when one or more of 'em broke. Seeing such a great player put such emphasis on changing strings got me thinking.
If I were playing guitar for a living or even just a one-off performance, I'd change more often. Old strings lose their tuning stability.
