CY - you again amaze me with your ability to be there with beautiful bass lines that enhance a song but let the song and singer stand out on their own. Thanks for joining this forum and sharing so much.

Jewel is also a world class yodeler. Yes, yodeler. No joke. I kid you not.

If you have ever heard her yodel, it's actually quite amazing....

. . . or a past. :D

Freddels I hope you dont mind but you sort of teed up something...

The concept of pointing out whether Jewel is still relevant is not reflective of her talent. It is a horrible statement of the music business. SInger songwriters are sort of doomed. Production and exposed body parts and hype are a more current formula. People Like Lisa Loeb who is a dear friend of mine are sort of in the same box. The market left her behind She still works and makes beautiful music but she is not the flavor of the month now.

Look at the you tubes of Lady Gaga before she decided to adapt her career to Madonna 101. (NOt slamming Madonna...a true machine that still has a mystique into her 50's)Actually quite good...homely girl at the piano cant get arrested. But new name, garish outfits...headlines, exposed body parts All to sell her music. Britney Spears took the class and melted down, and now Hannah Montana is in her freshman year of Madonna 101.

In the time since that Jewel record...(I called it a record!) There was still a little radio...the last traces of it....Between SFX Clearchannel...Satellite all force fed homogenization for our sonic palate backed by viral shots of supposed private leaked sex tapes/nipple slips....THere were still record stores who looked like grandpa jones running a 10K...they collapsed to give way to wal mart end caps....Only to be sort of rescued by Steve Jobs..... Andf then Irving Azoff and his mafia decided to monopolize management, agents and tickets and venues.

BTW Luke is in Spain today on a whirlwind highly successful promo tour. Toto has sold 80 million records....They have yet and never will be nominated into the rock n roll hall of fame. They couldnt tour USA without paying to play.

So Freddels your two world past struck a chord that is now going to be my next blog post. Thanks!

cyoung, I'd imagine I'm not the only one that'd be interested in seeing a list of other songs/artists you've worked on/with.

I know you probably don't want to brag and such.....but I think the cats kinda already outta the bag, haha!

Props for shaping the soundtrack of MANY people's lives!

THIS is just one of the many reasons I love you dude!

:D

Well said and I totally agree. Unfortunately I live this everyday! Between gigging and engineering I see WAY too many talented people who have something relevant to say both musically and lyrically but will never get the chance becasue of the nature of the business of the music business. I fear that we are so far down the road now that there is no turning back...Thanks for your honesty and your candor and for just being you. I respect you on so many levels for being yourself at all times and not getting caught up in the "game" of being a CEO. I WISH there were more people like you in the business. We would all be much better off!

Craig I have always loved that track and thought the bass part really made the song! GREAT feel and tasteful playing. I love the space you created but still filled the spaces that needed them...This is what bass players are supposed to do! Thanks for sharing!

Peace,

T

There are tons of talented musicians out there either still trying to make a living at it or have pretty much accepted the fact that they never will. I went to Berklee and then North Texas in the early 80's and I know so many extremely talented musicians it's not even funny. Some are now teaching, some playing, some both, some just ended up getting a job or changing to a different career path. One is out with Frampton and still playing at a high level, one is with DMB, others are doing the local gigs, some play in military bands, some don't play at all anymore.

I don't like Clearchannel and the like or ticketmaster and all the other corporate interference with the creativity of truly talented musicians.

But I do love good music, good tunes, and a good hang with other musicians.

Very nice Craig! Can you share some info on how you got your "first real gig in a real studio" etc... I've been playing since the early 80s here in L.A. and we all know what happened to the session scene here. How was it for you when you arrived in Nashville and how much of "who you know" was involved, or did you meet the right cats right away? Just curious - thanks!
