From what I was reading over at Talkbass, this thing is going to have a 30" scale, too.

I always knew guitar players were just frustrated bass players. :D

You don't need 8, nor 7, not even 6.

Paul Gilbert plays a three string guitar now all tuned to E.

If anyone has yet to hear his new release "Get out of my yard" go get it....it takes guitar playing to a new level above and beyond Mr Vai...

I think its unfair to bash Ibanez or nay other brand. Each to their own eh. You need to play them to have any informative opinion on the pros and cons. Most don't like them because of the thn wizard/prestige necks. Thats mainly down to playing style and technique and also favored genre - ie thrash, shred!

The techniques used to create mass produced and hand crafted instruments these days are generally accepted as being industry standard. After that its down to choice of body and neck materials, finish, electrics, set up etc.

There's never really a bad guitar (well I could name a few) in an industry led by EBMM, Fender, Gibson, Ibanez, Washburn, Charvel to name a few. They all make quality instruments that suit their prospective and interested buyers markets.

Opinions are a far cry from Facts remember.

I don't like brand-bashing either. I understand brand-loyalty but that doesn't require "hating" on other logos. Variety is the spice of life mah bruthas. :)

It's like being a "blondes" man and thinking there are no hot red-heads.

Anyway, back on topic. I'm for anything that may be innovative. Why 8 strings? I don't know. Why 6 strings? There once was a time where people thought the electric guitar was a crazy idea that would never catch on.

I'll remain open-minded and wait till I can play one. I own a 7 string guitar and think it's almost a different instrument because it makes me think in different ways than when I play a 6 stringer. That can't be bad.

Peace!

Dave

I have a custom 7 string that has the body contoured like an RG. Ibanez is good at doing what they do, but I don't personally own any of their guitars. I do have a MusicMan JP7...

I would try an 8 string guitar out, just for S&G, but probably wouldn't buy one.

But there's nothin quite like being a "blondes" man and one morning getting a phone call from said blonde while you're at work "Hey, guess what I just did to my hair!?!"

8 strings are awsome fun if you have patience. if you cant sit down and figure out how to use that high A then it will just piss you off ahahah:D

i took the low B off my 7 for a while and moved all the strings up and put a high A on it. It was fun for a while.

8 strings: Conklin leads the way here IMO. If I were to buy one (and I'd love to), it's what I'd buy.

Calling Charlie Hunter "gimmicky" is just flatly ignorant, sorry.

Signing up on an Ernie Ball/Music Man forum with the name 'Ibanez' in your nick, talking big about Ibanez guitars and then getting upset when people don't share your opinion (and calling them immature) is why this thread ended up how it did.

Look to yourself for a bit of maturity before accusing others for lacking it. ;)

If I had the cash to spare, I'd give Bill Conklin the $5k or so it would cost and have him build me a custom 8 string. The stuff he does is just amazing IMO.

I'd probably end up with something more like this:

Those Conklin's are just plain ugly, especially thet top one, surely they could design something thats a bit easeir on the eye.

I thought Fender tried the Alex Gregory 7 string model with a high A and it broke too easily. I think these instruments are going too far beyond the usable range of the guitar, if you wanna play lower, get a bass or baritone. If you wanna go higher, buy a violin.
I think 7's my limit.

The bottom 3, lowest tuned strings are bass strings tuned E, A, D. The top 5, highest tuned strings are regular guitar strings tunes A, D, G, B, E. You get guitar and bass on one instrument. Check out Charlie Hunter, amazing player but not really my thing.

I'm not into 7's so 8's is not the for me, but I've always been impressed by Conkling designs.

I'm not an ibanez fan but the fact that they produce a 8 strings will be very interesting for many players , because it won't be as expensive as Conkling does.

so, congrats for the idea...!

That Conklin is what I saw Rusty Cooley play....I think he is endorsed by another company now.

I have seen the fanned fret board before, but never tried them. It is certainly different. Not sure why the frets are fanned that way though....

Still, Ibby wants to make an 8 and that is their call. Good for them....you have to try out some things to see if they will work or not....

Tristan...never played a 7? They way you blaze up and down the fretboard, I could have sworn you either played a 7 string or had 4 hands...lol....;)

I had a 7 string....just did not work for me.

And fanned frets will actually make it possible to have a high A string whilst still keeping the low B at decent tension - that's something that is simply impossible with a flat 30" scale.

Cheers
