Anyone else here like Avenged Sevenfold? I like some of their songs and they sound quite unique to me (I'm not really versed into a lot of bands though).

IMHO if you need to invent a new sub-genre for your music then you're not different enough. If you were, people would notice without the fancy name. Did Beethoven define his music as romantic? I don't think so.

I don't really get on with modern metal generally- the growling gets a bit tiresome on the ears and no idea what the lyrics are. Is 27 too young an age to be describing contemporary music as a "racket"? :D

I've always been a big fan of Slayer and Anthrax and I loved Pantera when I was a kid, but a least I could pump my fist and sing along. And I always thought that was the whole point of metal (other than joining a band and "scoring hot chicks"- didn't really do very well with that due to what must be a lack of musical ability!!).

If push came to shove my fave modern metal sub-genre is Post Ironic Metal Crunk.

OK- I vow never to include sarcasm/irony in a forum post- it never comes across in written down form. Don't take my post literally- it was a joke. The recurring theme I've noticed is that people don't agree about music. Its very personal and very subjective. Yeah theres some good stuff about (obviously not Post Ironic Metal Crunk), but metal certainly doesn't have the edge it used to IMHO.

But my original post clearly states that anything with immature growling sucks- but i have to clarify that- cuz I don't want to sound like a miserable (27 year) old fart... Shouting/screaming/growling etc etc is great when it is used now and again- lets face it Metal is an aggressive form of music- so Eagles style harmonies aren't really appropriate- but when it is constant I find it sort of depressing that there isn't the vocal ability in metal music that there used to be.

And to add futher internet forum cliche... Just my two cents.

I am also confused about metal these days as they have all these sub categories like black metal, death metal it is ridicules. The bottom line is if I hear something and it is good that is all that matters. I totally hate that metal though where it sounds like the vocalist swallowed the microphone and is trying to take a dump at the same time. I really respect the kid Mark Tremonti for really busting his hump to be the best player he can be. Every article I read with him he talks about constantly practicing everyday and working on his technique. That is impressive.

Reminds me of an interview I heard about a few years ago when a musician was asked about being in a death metal band, and he had to correct the interviewer: "We're not a death metal band. We're a Satanic death metal band."

Sacred Mother Tongue is some good stuff, to be sure. Great production and sweet sweet playing. Andy James (former?) forumer is a machine on guitar.

I cover the genre of "metal" fairly well. Sorry, but none of those bands in my humble opinion classify as metal. Not a bad thing as they are great bands. i put them in the hard rock category. Dimmu Borgir, Gorgoroth, Woe of Tyrannts are metal to me. Include Arch Enemy and the like. I play that type of music and that is what metal is to me. Again, my opinion and only my opinion. I like and play extreme music...so...hair bands are not metal. That is pop/rock to me. Again, not a bad thing. I mean, Aerosmith is not remotely metal and they were classified that years ago by some idiots who wanted to sell magazines and MTV. I am into metal and they are just not it. Still, great bands....just not my definition of "metal" and I am not the be all end all either. Just my 2 pennies.

I probably shouldve been more clear, as I love Meshuggah, Opeth, After the Burial and Lamb of God, thats what I really consider todays Metal heavy contenders. I'm glad there are other extreme metalheads in here. I guess I use the whole "Metal" term loosely.

Well,I`ll puy my 2 cents here.\m/
Being a pro violin player for symphony orchestra I play mostly classical/romantic/baroque things, but when off work I`m really into "slightly" different kind of music:from Prokofiev to Slayer, from the Cult to Behemoth, from Paganini to Andy Timmons...

There are so many different styles of metal now...it sucks to have them all segregated like they are.

I'll listen to anything from Disturbed to Whitechapel to Dio to Veil Of Maya.

Mikael Akerfeldt is one of my gods :D Dudes got it all, great voice, great scream, smooth solo style, great balance of heaviness and melody. I hope my next project echoes a little Opeth, because ironically, the band that was the reason for me posting this (my own) has since ended. My singer and I are off to better and hopefully heavier things :)

I saw a show on Palladia or HDnet recently that was about metal and its origins and they had a breakdown of all the sub catagories of metal. It looked like a family tree of someone named Smith. It was ridiculous.

I think most metal is just silly, but it still is my favorite genre. Dark Tranquillity are gods, and Protest the Hero is one of the best bands to ever come out. It is almost a shame that Dark Tranquillity has to deal with death/black metal fans and Protest has to deal with stoned college kid prog nerd fans. Those bands are just too good to deal with such dogmatic people.

Then there is the "metal that is not 'metal'" stuff. Personally, my favorite era of Metallica is the Load/Reload era. Ironically Load/Reload does not differ that much musically from some of their other albums, except for the fact that they sold so many more records than before. Also I am loving the new Bullet for My Valentine record, it is one of the the best things I have heard in quite some time.

As for metal having so many subgenres, that is just what happens when you don't have industry suits breathing down your necks to conform.

Alterbridge, In This Moment, Halestorm, Sixx A.M., Evanescence are among my favourites now. But that's mainly on the US side of music. On the other hand, I like Xandria, Within Temptation, Lacuna Coil, Kamelot, Nightwish and Delain on the EU side...

There's great music to be found still these days. You just have to look a bit harder. Hahaha!!!
