?

I read thru about 6 pages and didn't really find the answer--maybe someone posted it later---How is the finish done ? By reading the discription one might think that the necks are placed in a kiln or the wood was kiln dried some way before the necks were made. It seems logical that some wood can be dried in a kiln a certain way to achieve such a discoloration----but then again maybe there is no logic and a dark stain is used? Oh well..................

One of those fugly Bongo 5 Hp's w/roasted neck coming my way! :D (but unfortunately not until november/december...)

I just placed my order with The Perfect Bass for a Roasted Bongo 5H and they said it would probably be November, which also is my birthday month. Eventually MM will do something freaky with the body wood on the Bongo and I might have to get one of those too. ;)

I'm interested to see what this black sugar color looks like up close and in person... the pictures really don't show much, but I'm hoping that it's super sparkly:cool:

With the roasted basses, I know they only come in 1 color but how about the pick guard? Is there only one color with it too or can you order different color pick guards for it?

you know I think you should get the sss big al as it is a different animal and a really friendly one to boot

Man I have been tearing myself apart agonizing over this one! I can usually only carry a MONO Double bag with me on the road because I never leave my basses in a truck or under a bus or in a van especially overnight. I have an SR5 and my 25th with me most of the time now and LOVE the combination of the 2. I KNOW for sure I have to get an SR5 H in this finish because I love the SR5... and I HAVE to have a 5 with me all the time. That leaves me with only one slot left in the case. I was thinking about going with a Stingray with a single H, SLO neck, 2 Band EQ to go with the SR5 but I am wondering how close the Big Al SSS will get me to the tone of a Ray with the 2 back PUPS in Parallel and Series??? Anyone can help me with this?

IF I knew it would be really close tonally I would get the Big Al SSS and call it a day. I HAVE to to get that tone though as it is the one that is in my head. I am going for a Paul Spencer Denman Stingray tone but it would be VERY nice to have a few other tones in my arsenal from time to time for the tunes that need them. For what its worth I REALLY don't care about having a bunch of OK tones if I can just have 1 great one! I know the Ray will give me the tone I love so much but I really dig the neck and the feel of the Big Al after having played a few of them now. I will most likely keep my 25th 4 HH for use in the studio so I have that Jones covered...

Somebody HELP!!

Peace,

T

The Big Al is a different animal altogether, and the SSS model has Neodymium magnets to boot - further distancing itself from a 'classic' Ray tone.

The Big AL will never give you an EXACT Ray tone, because, well...it's not a Ray, but if you a seriously considering the Big Al as an alternative and need to get as close as possible to that 'Ray sound', your best bet is probably to go for the single H. You get the active/passive switch, the series/parallel switch, and when in active mode you get access to the 4-band EQ - allowing you to slice in on different tonal varieties. The closest to getting a 'classic' Ray tone would most likely be Active/Parallel/Flat EQ. Remember though, the Big Al's single H utilizes ceramic magnets whereas the Ray uses Alnico, although I don't see that as a major obstacle. It's actually more of a plus in my opinion.

FYI for lefties... I just confirmed with Scott in customer service that the roasted neck basses ARE available left-handed.

Great news.
