I would flail endlessly about on an unlined board (picture a weasel on meth), but that is just about as dead sexy as it gets.

That bass was surprisingly easy to play. Side dots are where the 3,5,7 etc frets would be - not in-between like on a fretted or lined fretless bass. Amazing tone out of that one!! Sold to a forumite last I heard.

Congratulations smallequestrian! You must be a happy camper with these two beauties. The 'burst really suits the body shape.

FWIW I LOVE the white/maple/orange swirl one. Great colour combo :D

You've inspired me to head off to my local ye-olde-guitar-shoppe musical emporium to see if any Big Als actually made it to my part of down under.

Cheers

Had a great rehearsal with my Big Al yesterday.

We are preparing for a fun show / bandcontest in march, where they make up a motto every year. It is called the "Grand Prix de la Rock". Basically they pick a time period and a certain musical style and every band picks an artist that fits into that. You have to choose 4 songs and arrange them as Rock-Covers, no matter what it has been originally.
It is also a lookalike-contest and you get points for your stageoutfit.

Next years motto is german "Schlagerstars" of the 70ies. This has been a dark period of music that could best be decribed as lame mainstreampop to please your mother-in-law.

Since we where late we had to take what was left and got "Peter Maffey". He just did very greasy ballads that we are trying to transform to a sound in between AC/DC, Therapy and Rammstein. We play in a classic Rock -lineup with 2 Guitars, drums and bass.

The Big Al does sound so good in the mix with those 2 distorted guitars that i grinned for the whole evening. I used the series setting in active mode with bass and loww mids boosted a little, high mids boosted a little more and the treble cut a little.

In this setting, you get why it is called the BIG Al. It just sounds huge with great lows and low mids but without being muddy. I tried to get close to this sound for years with P-basses, lots of eq-tweaking and wit tools like the sansamp and stuff, but the Al just nails it straight with the amp set flat besides a little boost to the low midrange.

Thanks again to BP and EBMM for making this great instrument! I am really curious for the Bigger Al now....

Good thing they don't make the big al in fiesta red with a tort guard or I would be in trouble

Since there seems to be no such thing as a Big Al owners group, i think we should start one to share our experiences with that crazy tool for tons of tones.

So here I go:

The bass just sounds awesome with the genz benz shuttle or with my Peavey Pro Bass 500 and my FMC 4x12 Neo-Cab.

I am a new member to the forum. Just joined today, but used the members' insight into my decision making.

I just picked up my BIG AL just over a week ago. It's identical to Cellkirk74's. I must say that I was intrigued by the technology, enchanted by the beauty of this finish in particular, and had every one of my expectations blown out of the water when I plugged this in to play.

I have been a life-time F*$&#r user. I have 2 Ps, and a J-5. I like the feel and tonal characteristics that both of these basses offer for various playing styles. I can honestly, part of my affection for this product is that I have not really known anything else. That being said, I have always felt that I was missing something when I would hear the EBMM basses because I could get the round tone, and I could get the cut, but never with the same conviction and prominence that the EBMM line has.

This all changed when I got the BIG AL. Firstly, the feel was amazing, it is the first maple board I've ever liked the feel of enough to buy, and believe me I've tried my share. All of this compared nothing to the amazingness of the electronics and sound produced by this bass: the maple fb sounds bright but still has a very rich low end growl. The pickup selection adds any tonal option you could ever want and the passive/active option has already saved me in a live setting (bad buzz from a crap DI in passive was solved with a simple flick of a switch).

I may be overly romantic about this being that I'm a newbie, but I can honestly say after having this out for 2 gigs the past weekend, that it blew my mind completely. I can honestly say that I am a true believer that this bass will be the hallmark for future technologies and basses. The gorgeous design and unprecedented sound capabilities will take over the market. Like BP said on the video "Don't be afraid to try something new". AMAZING JOB!!! Thanks for this wonderful instrument. I have ZERO regrets.

Congrats lefenton!

The Big Al is a keeper for sure. Plus there were not that many made in olive gold. I thinks yours too will have an alder body, what makes it even more special since they are made of mahogany now.

Thanks cellkirk74!!!

I believe our basses are of the same vintage. I was told mine is an alder body!!! It's got a beautiful weight and balance to it to boot!!! They just arrived in Canada the week I picked this up so I imagine it's from the first run of production with the alder body.

The colour was honestly the first thing that attracted me to this bass because I have only ever played rosewood fb. Not to mention I didn't see this scheme available online. But this thing was too beautiful not to try. Then once I picked it up everything changed for me and I now love the maple. I could go on endlessly about the tone. I've had it out to 2 gigs and 2 rehearsals and haven't looked back. We are blessed.
