The new StingRay's do come with a 'must be this badass to ride' requirement I do believe.

I like the added PU. I'd jump on one instantly if it came with a string-though bridge and since I'm adding my wishlist hear and hopefully someone at EB will consider, why not adding an active passive switch as well?????

I guess I'm just not one for change. The first thing I thought of when I saw the pics was, hmmmm G&L, been there, sold it, I like the single pup Stingray much better. But I would choose the two pup Stingray over a......awwwww...... I can't even say it. Ya know it's like puttin two split pups on a P-bass, it just doesn't work for me.

I look at it like this. In my driveway are two cars. Both have 4 cylinder engines, 4 tires, 4 doors, a windshield, one steering wheel, one CD player.....

I mean, if an alien taxonomist showed up and assumed they were plants or animals, he might well classify them as the same family.

But one is a Toyota and the other is a Honda. One's an SUV and the other is not.

You see my point.

Which is, perhaps, that I still need more coffee.

I’ve learned to try everything, hell I even ordered a Bongo!

I too have a G & ***L, it was my first five string, but when I figure out how to actually SELL something on eBay, it’ll be the first to go. I can’t figure it out, it’s got a lot of switches and knobs and pickups, but I can’t get a sound out of it I like.

My SR5 on the other hand pretty much has the sound I want when set flat! Turn a knob the slightest bit either way and something actually happens. My SR5 is obviously a high precision, well made instrument and I would expect all the new models to meet the same high standards. I’m sure a lot more was considered than just slapping another pickup on it.

I think the knob controlling the new pickup should be labeled… “More”.

I’m still in a very deep Bongo lust phase right now, but I’m thinking about trying a fretless and a SR4 with an H/S or maybe a Sterling sure would be nice. (Are there lefty Sterling’s?)

Now if we could find someone left handed and more famous than me to beg for the piezo option for us lefty’s… :D

TR4A why don't you play it and then make up your mind? It is really nothing like a G & L

Wow, who would even think a EB Music Man and a G&L are even in the same palying field, "" NOT "" The Last G & L I ever had turned into a Ball Cap Hanger.

We're not even in the same world here Gentlemen.
Proudly Saying, Dave Jeffrey :D

To solve the control plate on/off issue how about this idea:

All new Dual pickup Stingrays come with no control plate, but a control plate is included with your bass. The control plate has no screwholes (just holes for the knobs), and on one side has a 3M Sticky stuff on one side covered by wax paper (or whatever they use to cover it before use). All you do if you want a control plate is remove the knobs, take the paper off the backside of the control plate, put it over the knobs with the sticky side on the body, put the knobs back on and BAM! A beautiful 2 Pickup control-plated monster!

How 'bout it?

I agree until we get a chance to see the bass in person and play it, it's all speculation. I think G&L's are great basses, the Stingray just is a better fit for me. I played a Sabre and it was very dark sounding. But then again no two basses are identical. I hate to think that posting an honest opinion of how we react to a pic of the "newest" entry into the world of basses is unacceptable. My first reaction to seeing a G&L ASAT was OMG I have to have it. Then it turned out as much as I loved the look of it, I just didn't bond with it. Sold it and I thought I never would. I hope we aren't at a point where if we don't all agree it's the greatest thing since sliced bread we should just keep our thoughts to ourselves. I think the SR4 is a masterpiece. Others don't. No hard feelings from me.

No one is saying you can't voice your opinion. Everyone is welcome to voice their opinion, but it's not like they are doing away with the classic single pickup stingray. If you don't like the new versions you are free to not purchase one. Obviously a G&L L1500 and a Stringray 5 play and sound nothing alike. Why would a Ray with 2 pickups sound or play like a G&L all of a sudden? Apples and Oranges if you ask me.

I got the unedited reply, first of all I didn't say it would play or sound like a G&L I believe I said the look of it reminded me of G&L. We were discussing PICS of the new bass. It amazes me how defensive and personel guys take it when someone else isn't "in love" with the same instruments or amps or cabs. When someone says they don't care for or aren't knocked out by something it's like you called their momma a bad name. I also think G&L's ARE in the same "playing field" as Music Man basses. I just happen to like the Music Man. I think it is pretty obvious anyone can choose to buy whatever they desire. I don't think that really is a point of enlightenment. Is it a better forum if the posts always go like this?
"I really like the new bass"
" Me too I love it."
"Yeah I think it rocks"
"Right on dude, These things kill"
" Lets all buy one"
" I got mine today and it is the best ever"
" I'm next, I'm sellin every bass I own to buy one"
" Me too"

and on and on an on. Gosh we'd be happy then huh?

Dave, you know me well enough to understand my view on this sort of thing and believe me, your opinion is more than welcome here.

For the rest of you guys, I understand - to an extent - your defense, somtimes at all costs, of your instrument of choice, but yes, even I have basses that were not built in San Luis Obispo. Even...dare I say it? BP has non-EBMM instruments. And of course there's Jon....well, let's leave him out of it.

The thing is, and I don't think he'd mind me saying this (and if he does he'll tell me that too), Big Poppa and I have had a few phone conversations lately and he really WANTS this to be more wide-open, to be a place where even dissenting opinions, within reason, are welcome.

This is a fabulous learning opportunity for EVERYONE involved, but only if we embrace and respect other points of view.

Hope that helps.

In all the excitement I forgot to mention I like the 2nd pic but maybe with the control plate. Now if you posted a pic of a "buttercreme" one maybe I would have been one of the "happy campers"

Hey Dave,

What I said to you is play it and hear it before you judge it or compare it to something else....It may remind you of a g&L and after objective testing and then I have no problems whatsoever with you view.

As I have said many times before its all about choices....These new models just offer you
choices.

This is a Music Man forum so there is natural bias..thats good too..You probably felt that I didn't want to accept any opinion but a positive one and I think that you may not have afforded me the opportunity to tell you my opinion....bottom line try them if you like them great if you dont then maybe fire off a post of constructive critisism, or keep playing your Sting Ray..win win for all of us
