The downside to playing flats is that I don't have a lot of opportunity to try new strings. I only change them once every 10 years or so.

Hahaha....my thought exactly. Can't wait to check them out!! Judging from when the first Cobalt rounds came out, I suspect I'll have to order them as I'm guessing the local retailers won't even know they exist for a while.

Same dilemma here ... but mebbe you need to think just a
tiny bit more creatively. See, this is the perfect moment to
acquire another bass, one that needs strings ?

Is there any demo video of new cobalt flats???

I'm pretty interested to try one 5 strings set, especially when I saw this official recension:

Gauges .045 .065 .080 .100 .130

Ernie Ball Slinky Flatwound Bass Strings combine the smooth feel of traditional flats and the modern power of Cobalts. Featuring a SuperBright Cobalt Ribbon wrap, Cobalt Underwraps and optimal hex-core to wrap ratio, the new Flatwound Bass strings are the first flat that actually feels like a flat and sounds like a round.

"But, honey--the strings on all of my basses were too new. I HAD to buy a new bass for these strings. It would have been wasteful, otherwise!"

Maybe people want a round that feels like a flat?

I like both rounds and flats. I will always love the sound of a nice dead flatwound string. But, I'm definitely curious to see what these bring to the table. The roundwound Cobalts instantly became my favorite roundwound strings. I want to see how that translates to a flatwound.
