x-ray, your Natural Velvet Sterling was completed on 02/12/96. It was originally shipped to the old Bass Centre in L.A.

BTW, what's 'natural velvet' exactly? Is it just EB's name for natural finish?

It was a non-glossy matte finish we used, and pretty much just offered on the Sterling. We kind of discovered it by accident and decided it looked pretty cool, so we offered it. All of the naturals we do now have a glossy finish.

Hi Jim.

The switch is a mod. It could be an active/passive setup but my guess is that it's used so the pickup coils can be connected in series rather than the normal parallel. It's probably inoperative if you can't detect any differences.

Your pre-amp should be electrically the same as found in all other two bander SR4s (Pre-EB and Ernie Ball). The battery only powers the pre-amp. The pickup is passive. As the circuit boards changed shape around 1990, yours should have a rectangular board while the latter ones are shaped like a crescent moon.

Rod, you look to be right. I opened it up (I think for the first time since I bought it!?!) and it appears there had been some work done. When I put it back together and tried it out all of a sudden I could hear a difference with the switch. It seems to either cut highs when it is down or boost them when it is up.

Man, I thought the outside of this baby was ugly... note the use of speaker wire on the inside!?!

Tajue, the completion date of your StingRay is 4/08/92. It was shipped to GC Hollywood.

Hope that solves the mystery! BTW the official color name is Translucent Red (although I like your color name better)

thank you very much for the info.... I bought it off EBay and they said it was translucent-wine so I liked it too and ran with it..

also 5stringer my bass has a maple neck that is covered with birdseye,, was this common on any bass or do you know if it was a special order neck,, just never seen any others with this much detail?

When birdseye maple was a lot more plentiful, we used to get a lot more of it for the same price as regular maple. So we would use on mostly guitars, and sometimes on basses. Now that birdseye is so in demand, not only with instrument companies but even hardwood floor and furniture companies, there is less of it around, so we seldom use it on basses. Would you believe there was a time when people would burn what they called "distressed" wood as they thought it wasn't good for anything? Wish we had some of that wood back ....

Hi, just this minute joined this forum.
Ive also just performed my first gig with my new Stingray last night. Its a SR4, in deep red trans colour (including the headstock), Maple neck and headstock, Rosewood frets, and the serial number on the backplate is E58734. Its beautiful!
