you'd have to ask dizzy. he's the one who seems to think my opinion is invalid unless i can play like paul gilbert. thats like saying i have to be in the nba to think that michael olowakandi was the worst #1 draft pick ever.

You knob-end. Again, read peoples posts properly. My post was a tongue-in-cheek dig at the fact you'd used up the entire english vocab in your previous posts and (sarcastically) maybe a vid would give a different perspective (and give our eyes a break). I even stated that wouldn't prove anything !

Hell, my initial posts even showed consideration of comments.

OK, enough of trying to fit the whole dictionary into each and every one of your posts tm........ sheesh, and you reckon 1-4-5 progressions are monotonous !!! ;)

I happen to agree that one or two of the players you've mentioned are over-rated - but still respect them for what they have achieved and contributed to music........ they definitely deserve it.

Just for something different, (and I know it doesn't really prove anything, but) how about posting a vid of you playing some really technical stuff to give a different perspective on how superior or innovative it is to some of the 'over-rated' players' styles you've mentioned ? :p

You were the one who got all defensive & bitchy and decided to take it further.

And now you've had your virtual head stuck up your virtual ass, you're clutching at straws trying to turn it around and make me look like the bad guy.

It's like arguing with my fat, unpopular, pretentious little 11yr old niece.

Oh, and this is a classic :

He wasn't, Sam Bowie was. :)

are these the dying gasps of an aging generation? dave gilmour is fat and balding now...floyd is irrelevant...influential but more on a subconscious level, absorbed through osmosis more than anything...filtered down through each successive phase of music. jeff beck keeps dying his hair...the stones have to be rolled out in wheelchairs...in a way, i'm glad john lennon is dead, because it prevents a beatles reunion tour from ever happening. the beatles have cemented their legacy as greatest band ever now, without ruining it by some 2010 album...i can just picture mccartney singing with autotune, and a bevy of half-naked harlots behind him in the video. the past is history...

 what a jerk you are !!! how can you be so ignorant and showing no respect for those people ?

Let's just stop it there on tm21 - he is entitled to his opinion, that's perfectly OK. His tone and way of saying things and personal insults suggest he is immature and has personal complexes - that's not OK, but we are not a psychiatrists' forum, for God's sake.

Let's move on to the more important things - like MILF contests and stuff. Now, for what I know, a contest of that kind during a concert when our band plays would make us do it with a lot more passion, not to say "feel" :).

I can understand what you are trying to say but I think as you get older your mind set will change. First I have to terribly disagree about the Beck comment as if you polled the greatest players out there I would assure you he would be on the top of most ballots and is Steve Lukathers idol.

I dont know how you can say he has no chops when he has one of the greatest set on the planet, and his work with a trem probably has no equal. When I was young and getting into lead playing I was obsessed with speed probably like 90% of the guys on the forum. There were a lot of pretty bad bands in the 80s but everyone of them pretty much had great players technique wise, and there are a lot of good solos and guitar work in some bad songs.

But it got to a point where guys just started to play fast for the sake of playing fast with no sense of melody that really just sounds like sh!t. So would we say the best guitarist is the guy who can play the fastest. If you catch an early Vanhalen article you will here him say he went through the whole fastest gun in the west mentality then realized it meant nothing and everything starts and ends with the song.

I love guys that can put the metal to the pedal but know what they are doing. A good example would be Vai's For The Love Of God which is also my favorite song of his and probably his best known. The song starts with a beautiful melody that is played at a slow tempo that gradually builds and when he takes it into warp speed it fits perfect, and is what it is a great song.

I used to goof on BB King when I was young and say what is so special about his playing until I got heavy into the blues and then it all made sense. Try and find him doing an 8 bar blues and you will see what I mean.Just about every top gun out there hits a point (except for Yngwie) where they come full circle and focus more on better melodies and writing than sheer speed. Satch was the one guy with super human chops who did instrumentals from the get go who always put the song first, and maybe that is why he sold the most albums for an instrumentalist. Yngwie on the other hand always puts speed first and when I saw him on the G3 tour I was totally floored and shocked how much I liked him live and would deffinetly pay to see him again but I still cant listen to more than two songs of his recorded as it does nothing for me.

I will agree and say there are haters out there who use the saying that guys who can shred have no feeling which we know is not true as the guys I just mentioned can prove that wrong. But speed is just one part of playing just like a great vibrato or any other technique. I do not come from the shred era and cannot play at the speed of a lot of guys but that does not mean I do not use or practice tapping, sweeping or 3 note per string scales and runs in my playing as I would like to have as many options that would work well over a piece of music as I can.

And as far as feeling I will stand behind it big time that there are a lot of guys who do not play with it either fast or slow. The last song I heard that made me go wow was Dragonforce Through The Fire and The Flames which I heard my kids playing and I had to come in and download. I am 48 and most guys I know did not care for it or said it was fast for the sake of being fast and I had to disagree big time as I think it is a really well written song with some amazing playing, and to me it all starts and ends with the song.

I often hear about these "Feel players" who concentrate on milking all the "emotion" out of each note. ...perhaps its my age and I'm not "mature" enough to appreciate these subtle nuances.

Been watching this thread for a while now... and tm21 gave the answer to his question right from the beginning ;)
Why don't we put this thread on hold for the next... say... 15 years and then come back again :p ???
