Only 5?!?!?? HA, I'll break the rules also. In no particular order:

Randy Rhoads
Paul Gilbert
John Petrucci
Dimebag Darrell
Joe Satriani
Kerry King
Jeff Hanneman
Glen Tipton
KK Downing
Keith Baim
OC
NoRm
Segovia
Lawrence Juber (thanks Keith)
Bela Fleck (thanks Keith)
David Gilmour
Alex Skolnick (sp?)
Vai
....and the dude that whipped Vai in the Crossroads movie....Ralph Macchio!!
Jerry Cantrell

After the April 9th concert, I am sure Steve Morse will be on top of the list.....have to wait and see.

How can you pick just 5?

That's the point to this thread. Anybody can pick 10 or 20, hell you can name 50 great guitarists. But, can you actually sit there and only name your top, favorite, influential, greatest 5 of all time. Guitarists, can't seem to follow rules and go with the program.....sheesh!!!! ;) :D

Isn't Bela Fleck a Banjo player ??????

Oh well - it still has strings on it. ;)

True. But it ain't Deliverance.

Find his cd UFO TOFU (or DVD Live At The Quick). My favorite "find" since Steve Morse way back in '82.

UFO TOFU has an amazing harmonica/keyboard player on it. No longer with the band. And bass player extroidinaire Victor Wooten!

back to the point about lute players...

lute players actually were fundimentally improvisationalists (sorry. little hung over. bad speller this morning)

while they had very specific patterns and scales that were nearly universal among their peers, they all actually employed them in different ways, and different orders, making the bulk of their repitoir (god my spelling...) improvised.

aahhh... FINALLY that hedious music appreciation class was useful for something.

When I was out in Cali, Keith came to visit and gave me a video of Bela Fleck and amazing is putting it lightly. But, yes, he is a banjo player. Still find inspiration in his style and try to incorporate it in my playing. Awesome stuff, you all should check it out.
