Has anyone seen the April issue of Guitar World!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Some knucklehead named Alexi Laiho is quoted saying, "There are lots of guitar players out there who play super fast and super well--but they're also super lame. Like Dream Theater." WHAT THE @#%$*!!!!!!!   I don't know who this guy is. Obviously a new shredder and must be good to be on the cover of Guitar World with Steve Vai and Zakk Wylde. But come on!!!! This snot nose kid needs to be a bit more respectful!!!!!!!!!!!

He is the guitarist of Children of Bodom. A decent thrash metal band. Dude can seriously play. However, that is being disrespectful. I know JP could sit junior down and school him in a minute. We know that. So, no need to get mad. Just a dude looking for some attention for himself and his band. This usually happens when a new band is gaining popularity. I mean, come on, can you take him seriously??!?!!

I found all three of those pieces enlightening in light of the disparagement....in that all of those guys spoke form the heart....Zakk especially. One of the better issues recently....I mean I can ony read so much about Jet and Sum41 doing illicit substances and hanging with random female companions....

I like how zakk always praises 1/2 a dozen guitarists everytime I read about him. And it seems he's in every issue of every guitar magazine all the time.

I've never heard him play actually, but always wished he was featured a bit in THE OSBORNES. I mean, you can only watch those little bratty kids for about 5 minutes before wanting to yak and a little band interaction, rehearsing, and writing new material would be a welcome relief.

Never heard the kid who slammed Petrucci play, but naming your band after gruesome murders is a bit on the freakish side. I guess JEFFREY DAHMER'S BED AND BREAKFAST was already taken.

(not proud having thought that up)

Sounds like Malmsteen. I remember reading this interview of Malmsteen back in the 94 or 95. They blindfolded him and asked him his opinion on a few songs (one of them was Under a Glass Moon). He abused every single artist except ... Blackmore (no surprises there though).

Yeah, I remember that article. It was a column called "In the Listening Room" that used to run in Guitar Player or Guitar for the Practicing Musician. They would take a guitarist and play random songs for them without mentioning the song or artist names, and have the guitarist comment on what they were hearing.

Yngwie just belittled everything he heard until they played Blackmore, which he obviously recognized. But then, we all know how humble he is.

I actually kinda like Children of Bodom...vocals are a lil on the harsh side, but i can deall

but i really like Dream Theater (and John of course) , the reason I like JP so much is because he can play superfast but in a non-lame fashion, i'd like to know what Alexi's definition of lame is

as a matter of fact i was just playing along to "Scarred"...i LOVE that song!

oh and just curious, does anyone remember what Yngwie had to say about "Under A Glass Moon?"

Eventhough I don't approve of YJM being so obnoxiuos, he has proven himself. This is a snot nose kid who is just coming into it and he's bashing JP!! He needs to stop sniffing paint and come to grips with reality. Hey, do you think there is some connection between these two guys??? ;)

I have the new GW issue and found Alexi Laiho's interview extremely entertaining. He actually berates DT/JP in a couple of different places. After what fancric posted above, Laiho goes on to say.."It's not even music; It's sports; And there are all these guys who concentrate on all the little details and never f$%^ up a single note when they play live. You know what? Thats not cool!" I nearly fell out of my chair laughing. But he seems to be a decent player. I've not heard his band before. Are they any good?

Haha I remember that issue so well. Sundar, I think we actually laughed together at Malmsteen's comments in that issue back in Manipal.

Some of the things he said were crazy. Actually I don't think Blackmore was even played to Yngwie in that listening session. He bad mouthed every single guitarist including Satriani(He can't bend to the right pitch), Hammett(I forget what he said), Beck(Thats Jeff Beck??? You gotta be kidding me!), Dimebag(he said good things about Dime's riffing and reserved some extremely crude comments on Phil Anselmo's singing). The only decent things he had to say were about Steve Vai(You know when Steve vai is playing. He has his own sound and thi is some of the best stuff I've heard from him) and JP when he heard "Under a Glass Moon". He said something that went along the lines of "I think DT are the best new rock band to have come up in ages, and while the guitarist is good, he still hasn't found his own sounds. He has it all, and in this song he plays some sweeps and runs pretty much exactly like I would"

Thats the best I can remember...I'm going to go look for the issue. Hopefully I didnt lose it :)

Actually, I like the band. I have some of their CD's. Make no mistake, Alexi can play and is very good. The vocals (that would be him also) leaves something to be desired even in the genre his band is in. However, he has spent his time in the practice barn and maybe that is why his vocals sound like it coming staight out of a cow's behind. But, he is a young buck in the musical world and will one day probably meet JP and crew and have different feelings about his words.

In my humble opinion Dream Theater is one of the groups , like Yes, Rush etc . that occasionally every 10-20 years improve the musical picture of the global scene .
Guys like Alexi will always feel offended from something like this . Reason is probably that they wanted to be in their pants :D

I heard some tunes. I'm not that impressed. Sounds like many bands in that genre. They don't stand apart from the crowd. I've heard other bands that I feel are better. The kid can play though, I'll give him that much.

i'll feel guilty if i don't mention this, but one thing i MUST give the band credit for is the bridge to one of their songs, i think its freaking awesome (instrumental haha)

if anyone is interested in it, the song is "Needled 24/7"

the bridge starts at about 2:30ish

that section of the song is great, idk what it is about it, but it always gets me pumped

still think the kid shouldn't go around dissing people who can show him up

Well, I said it before, Alexi can play. He is no slouch by any means. However, he is not on that plateau like JP, Morse, Stach, Vai...etc. I think he can get there, but for now, he is outside looking in.

His band is just another thrash/death metal band. I don't think they stand out in that genre either. I happen to like that kind of music as well as other styles. His band is decent, but not in the league of others.

Needled 24/7 is a cool tune. I happen to like it as well.

Live, they all screw up. On that note, he is just plain out and out lying. Grow up. Even the guitar gods make mistakes live. It is how you get through them without the majority of the crowd knowing that can set you apart....
