The bottom 3, lowest tuned strings are bass strings tuned E, A, D. The top 5, highest tuned strings are regular guitar strings tunes A, D, G, B, E. You get guitar and bass on one instrument. Check out Charlie Hunter, amazing player but not really my thing.

Incorrect, actually.

These particular instruments are tuned like a standard 7 string (low to high, B, E, A, D, G, B, E) with a high A.

The multi scale alleviates string tension problems (too little or too much).

They could be tuned however you want, that's just how these particular ones are done.

Those Conklin's are just plain ugly, especially thet top one, surely they could design something thats a bit easeir on the eye.

The top one is very simply what the customer ordered: 1 pickup, 3 octave neck.

Keep in mind, there is no "standard" Conklin, all his guitars are custom-made one-offs for the customer. So you are seeing what customers asked for.

So in that case there is no standard 6 string guitar as you can order any tuning with any neck from various custom manufacturers.
The 8 string i was talking about is what Charlie Hunter plays and is the one ive seen the most commonly on the net.
So by your reasoning, there is no standard?

The only "true" standard in life is the one in your avatar. I think I'll go have another pint now. Thanks! :)

Well that made sense. :D

Charlie Hunter plays a Penta, not a Conklin, and yes, it's made to his specs has he plays in a trio and handles guitar and bass duties.

It's a very function-specific instrument.

Most "atypical" 8 strings are setup exactly like a standard 7 string with a high A.

In otherwords, it's still supposed to sit in it's role in a band as a guitar, not a guitar AND a bass wrapped into one.

Jeffrey were yo the guy chastising Ibanez over Ibanez on the Ernie Ball Forum/ Just checking...This Conklin forum is smooth!

I don't think I'm repping Conklin really.

Just explaining other examples of properly-done 8 strings and explaining the multi-scale idea.

I'd be happy to stop if it's bothering you, Sterling.

I think you've talked tome enough in person to know me better than that. :)

I always knew guitar players were just frustrated bass players. :D

haha I was thinking maybe the idea that bassists were failed guitarists put forth recently by one or two bands has something to do with it. In any case, it sure looks interesting.
